You Grew In Our Hearts a unique book for adoptive children
Custom and semi-custom options help parents tell their child’s tale at www.storyforalifetime.com

Woodbury, Minn. — Discussing adoption with an adoptive child can be uncomfortable, even though it doesn’t need to be. Adoptive parents often are left to chart their own course of conversation when difficult questions are raised. Most children’s books on the topic address it in general terms for adoptive children, focusing on the author’s experience.
A new book, You Grew In Our Hearts, speaks to a specific adopted child, because the story is that child’s story.
Created by adoptive parents Cameron and Vachelle Johnston, You Grew In Our Hearts can be ordered in non-custom or custom formats, and provides a tool to answer certain inevitable questions in a warm and loving setting.
The ordering process is simple. Parents go to www.storyforalifetime.com and choose the gender and ethnicity of their child for a non-custom order. Custom books include gender and ethnicity, plus the opportunity for parents to add text that speaks directly to their adoptive child on a dedication page and three custom-text pages. The custom pages include personalized details, such as the child’s name, when the adoption was finalized, how his/her arrival was celebrated, and more. Both versions include illustrations that reflect the adoptive child in ethnicity and gender.
Cameron and Vachelle began to develop the book after they adopted their first daughter, Grace, in July 2005. “At that point, I prayed about how we were going to bring up the topic of adoption with Grace,” said Vachelle. “I looked for children’s books and couldn’t find anything that reflected our family. My main goal was to write the book for Grace, but we also wanted to help other families, too, so that their adoptive children could feel comfortable asking questions.”
Children’s most common questions can create opportunities for parents to have wonderful conversations about adoption:
  • Why didn’t my birth mother keep me?
  • How did you know you wanted me?
  • If I’m bad, can you un-adopt me?
“Because there are questions in the book, it lets the child know that it’s okay to ask additional questions,” said Vachelle. “Our primary concern was the child’s comfort level, so none of the questions are too sensitive. The book helps to send the message that adoptive children can always approach their parents with questions and feelings. “
Each book is assembled by the Johnstons, using a professional printing press and binding system, and heirloom-quality paper.
